SPC: A Specialty Job Service for Students
Summer Placement Consultants, Inc. is a summer job placement
service for high school and college students. Jobs typically entail
living with a family for all or part of the summer and assisting
with childcare and daily upkeep. Students enjoy good salaries plus
room and board. You must be at least 15 years of age to apply to
be a summer helper. The service is free to students -- there is
never any charge to students to apply or to be placed as a summer
helper.
Help With the Kids
The majority of SPC jobs involve helping a family take care of their
kids for the summer. These positions are often called Mother's Helpers
or Summer Babysitters or Summer Nannies. Children's ages range from
6 months to 12 or 13. Families will often have two or three or four
kids, and need that "extra pair of hands" to make the
summer go smoothly. Your duties will usually consist of getting
the kids ready for the day, feeding them their meals, organizing
and overseeing play activities and getting them ready for bed. You
may also be expected to help with the house clean-up and organization.
You typically will work an eight hour day (not necessarily eight
consecutive hours), have many of your evenings off and have at least
one full day off per week. Many families will provide you access
to a car.
Assist with Daily Errands and Household Chores
Some families just need help with managing their day-to-day errands
and household tasks. We refer to these positions as Granny Helper
jobs. Cooking, housekeeping, and running errands are usual mainstays
of these jobs. You may also be expected to help entertain guests
and do some gardening. Like the Mother's Helper position, you typically
will work an eight hour day (not necessarily eight consecutive hours),
have many of your evenings off and have at least one full day off
per week. Many families will provide you access to a car.
Nice Place to Spend a Summer
Job locations are often in resort areas such as Nantucket, Martha's
Vineyard, Block Island, Fishers Island, the Hamptons, Maine, Rhode
Island, California, the Oregon Coast, Colorado, Texas, and the Carolinas.
If you have a friend or friends who are also applying to be summer
helpers and you want to work with them in the same job location
area, please mention it on your application. We will do our best
to accommodate your request. Once you are hired, SPC can also provide
you with names and phone numbers of other students who will be working
in your same area.

"Thank you so much for putting me in contact with the
Johnson's this summer! I had an unforgettable experience!
I tell everyone that it didn't feel that much like I was a
nanny. I felt more like a part of their family! They were
always so kind to me, always made me feel included. I was
able to feel comfortable with them and to be me. I enjoyed
the boys very much; I grew very attached to them. I will miss
being silly kids with them! They told me that they would love
for me to come visit them throughout the school year, and
to even come back next summer!"

All
Summer Long or a Month or a Few Weeks
Jobs are available for all or part of the summer. Many jobs start
June 1 and continue through Labor Day. Some jobs are mid-June or
July 1st through mid-August, to accommodate college schedules. July-only
jobs and August-only jobs are plentiful. We often have last minute
requests for 2-3 week periods at the end of August and into September.
Families Carefully Screened
One of our primary goals is to find the right family for you. All
of our employer families have been carefully screened and many have
been using our service for several summers. We check references
and provide you the opportunity to do the same. We attempt to match
you to the family based on your skills, abilities, availability
and job location preferences.
Good Pay Plus Room & Board
Students enjoy good salaries plus room and board. It is up to you
to negotiate your salary, which depends upon your age and experience.
Last year, as a guide, college students earned an average of $350
per week. Graduate students earned an average of $450 per week; High schools students $250. You must assume your own transportation costs to
and from the job location area. Families will often pick you up
at the airport or other central location, but you will need to arrange
this with your hiring family.
Get Started
If you are interested, your first step is sign
up for a free SPC account and then fill out our online Student
Application Form. After we have received ALL of your required materials,
we will contact you to schedule an interview. After that, we will
contact you with opportunities that match your skills, abilities
and preferences. You will get a chance to speak with prospective
families to see if there is a match. The majority of our placements
are made in April and May.
